Crusades

For the past couple of weeks, we have been learning about the medieval time period.  Today, we watched a documentary on the 1st crusade.  The first crusade was initiated by Pope Urban II when he made a speech on how the Islamic powers in the East was a problem.  In 1095, he then did a counsel and sent out the word that there should and would be a crusade to take Jerusalem back from the Muslims.
Many knights, peasants, and lords went on the first crusade, including William the Conqueror's son in law, Henry I.  During the crusade, all of the crusaders felt that killing for Christ was an action of devotion. In 1097, the first crusaders arrive at Antioch. They stay outside of the city for 8 months.      After 8 months, they get a man on the inside to let some of them in. They take the city at dawn the very next day. After the joy of taking the city, awful news comes that the Muslim army was a day away. Everyone started to freak out and thought that they were going to die.
Then in 1098, a man named Peter had a vision. The vision was that they were going to dig up the spear that had stabbed Christ's side. Some men began digging and they found a piece of metal and thought that they had got what they had dug for. The next day, the Muslims arrived and were defeated by the crusaders.
A couple months later, the crusaders arrived outside of Jerusalem. Only 90% of what came from the West. In 1099 the crusaders liberated Jerusalem.

Echo

Juno took my voice away,
So now you can't hear me,
Although I have so much to say,
I am silent, like a tree.

But like a tree, I can make sounds,
You can hear them every day,
You just need to scream or shout,
I'll copy what you say.

My name is Echo,
As I'm sure you know,
But speak I cannot do,
Because of Juno,
That menace Juno,
Who might capture your voice too.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

Today we watched Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

I really enjoyed watching this movie. It was obviously about Robin Hood, but it tells a little bit about how he became Robin Hood and how people lived during the time that King Richard III was on the crusade.
The summary of this movie is Robin of Locksley saves an Arab from a death sentence. The Arab swears to stay with Robin until he repays him. They return to England and go back to Robin's home, Locksley Castle. They returned to find Lord Locksley dead and the only remaining servant of the household, blinded.
The Arab and Robin are chased off the property into Sherwood forest. They run into some outlaws including but not limited to Will Scarlet and Little John. As Robin leads the outlaws, he takes from the rich and gives to the poor. The Sheriff of Nottingham didn't really enjoy this. He sent team after team of people and soldiers to capture and/or kill the notorious Robin Hood.
When the whole hideout is ransacked and prisoners are taken, an amount of them is sentenced to be hung on the day of the Sheriff of Nottingham's and Lady Marians wedding. While all of this is taking place in Nottingham, in Sherwood forest Robin Hood is planning.
Robin HOood manages to save his men but the Sheriff of Nottingham and Lady Marian escape to be married. Marian doesn't want to marry the Sheriff, however, she is forced to do so. Robin Hood goes to stop the marriage but is unable to open the door. He goes around and enters by breaking a window. It is too late, they are already married! Robin Hood fights the Sheriff and ends up killing him and in the very end, King Richard comes back and Lady Marian and Robin Hood got married.
     (sigh) I love happy endings. : )
